Huntington Beach State Park

Huntington Beach State Park offers two easy trails with a lot of opportunities to sightsee. Huntington Beach State Park’s Kerrigan Nature Trail leads to a deck over Mullet Pond, home to shorebirds. It intersects with the Atalaya driveway, where you can see anhingas, herons, and more.

Sandpiper Pond Nature Trail is 2 miles through a maritime forest and cedars, oaks, and pines, through ancient dunes. The Maxwell Observation Deck gives views of wading birds and alligators.

Brookgreen Gardens Loop

5.5 miles from Litchfield Inn
Step onto these historic grounds for an easy 1.4-mile loop that isn’t usually busy. Brookgreen Gardens Loop is part of the botanical gardens, so you’ll need to pay for admission to the venue. Spending an afternoon in this sanctuary is worth it!

Brookgreen Gardens has a zoo and art museum, amid sculptures in a botanical garden. The butterfly house costs extra to visit.

Swamp Fox Passage (Palmetto Trail)

The prospect of hiking at least part of this 42-mile rail trail is a reason for enthusiasm. Swamp Fox Passage is one of the oldest trails in the Lowcountry, a long, flat, one-way hike. Traverse coastal pine forests and swampy wetlands in Francis Marion National Forest.

The eastern 27 miles are part of the National Recreation Trail. Hikers and mountain bikers follow an old railroad-grade path along a rough surface.

For relief from the hustle and bustle, we recommend a walk here. Live Oak Allée in Brookgreen Gardens abounds with beauty and historical significance. It’s an easy hike and a chance to see seasonal flowers and foliage.

Take a tour of Brookgreen Gardens while you visit, and stop for lunch at one of three on-site restaurants. This local gem is a magical place that many visitors find hard to leave.

Waccamaw Neck Bikeway

This bike trail has become a tradition for Litchfield visitors to visit. Waccamaw Neck Bikeway is an easy 18.6-mile, one-way, paved trail from Pawleys Island to Garden City. This multi-purpose trail runs along U.S. Highway 17. 

You can ride or walk from Pawleys Island to Murrells Inlet by the tail and Share the Road roads. Cyclists and walkers enjoy a 6-mile continuous stretch and two more of 4 miles each.
